Book Review: "Taking Back Astronomy" by Dr. Jason Lisle PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dave Dunbar

This is a small but wonderful book covering a rather big topic – the very universe itself. It is also a beautiful book, with an abundance of magnificent pictures of some things in space that God has created.

Dr. Lisle attempts to remind us of the vastness of creation, demonstrating the overwhelming power of the Creator. The things found therein are for God’s good pleasure and for His glory, and we are blessed with technology that allows us to take a peek at a few of those things – things which our ancestors couldn’t even dream about. He writes, “God paints beautiful artwork, and He does it on a canvas of unimaginable size.” (pg. 20).

The book serves as an excellent introduction to astronomy from a Creationist viewpoint. Dr. Lisle isn’t afraid to address some important issues. He answers such questions as:

  • What about the Big Bang?
  • How does a worldview influence interpretation of scientific data?
  • What were the “days” of creation in Genesis 1?
  • What is going to be the end of the universe?
  • Does naturalism provide satisfactory answers to problematic questions?
  • What is the “horizon problem”?
  • Where is all the missing anti-matter?
  • What about alien life on other planets?

The author concludes with a clear message of the gospel of Christ.

This isn’t just one of those books that you really ought to read. This is one of those books that should be read but that also deserves a prominent place in your own library – not just because it has stunning pictures – but because it faithfully and accurately honors the Word of God as being the inerrant and final authority in all things, and because it takes the vastness of creation and looks at it through the lens of Scripture.

“The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” (Psalm 19:1)
